Child Height & Weight Chart by Age (Bache ka Wazan aur Qad)

Almost every mother asks the same question sooner or later: "Is my child's height and weight normal for his or her age?" A relative says the baby looks thin, a neighbour's child of the same age looks bigger, and suddenly one number on the weighing scale starts to feel like a worry.

The good news is that this is easy to check. Use the free growth checker below, enter your child's sex, age, weight and height, and you will see the expected range for that age instead of a confusing percentile number.

What Does "Normal" Mean on a Growth Chart?

A growth chart does not give one correct number for each age. It gives a range, because healthy children come in different sizes. The normal range used here runs from about the 3rd to the 97th percentile. In plain words, most healthy children of the same age and sex fall inside it.

The average is simply the middle point of that range. A child who is a little below the average but inside the range is usually perfectly normal. Being average is not the goal; steady growth is.

Why one reading is not enough

A child's growth is judged by the pattern over time. A child who has always been on the smaller side and keeps growing steadily is usually fine. A child whose weight stops rising, or who drops from a higher range to a lower one over a few checks, needs a closer look even if the latest number is still inside the range.

Things that change the result

  • Premature birth: for babies born early, use the corrected age (the age counted from the due date) until about 2 years.
  • Family height: tall parents often have tall children, and short parents often have shorter children.
  • How you measure: under 2 years, length is measured lying down; after 2 years, standing. Weigh your child in light clothes on the same scale each time.
  • Recent illness: weight can dip after fever, diarrhoea or any infection and usually catches up once the child recovers.

Common Worries Mothers Ask About

Myth: "Mera bacha average se kam hai, matlab kamzor hai"

Ghalat: Average se kam wazan ya qad ka matlab hai ke bacha kamzor hai.
Haqeeqat: Average sirf beech ka number hai. Jab tak bacha normal range ke andar hai aur waqt ke saath barh raha hai, wo aam taur par theek hai.

Myth: "Doosre bachon se chhota hai, to growth ruk gayi hai"

Ghalat: Rishtedaron ya padosiyon ke bachon se chhota hai, matlab growth mein masla hai.
Haqeeqat: Har bache ka size alag hota hai, aur walidain ka qad bhi asar karta hai. Apne bache ka muqabla dusron se nahi, apni hi growth ke pattern se karein. Agar qad ya wazan barh raha hai aur range ke andar hai to ghabrane ki zaroorat nahi.

Myth: "Ek saal ke bache ka wazan 8 kg hai, ye to bohat kam hai"

Ghalat: Ek saal ke bache ka wazan 10 kg hona zaroori hai, warna wo kamzor hai.
Is hisab se 8 kg range ke andar aata hai. Dekhna ye hai ke pichle mahino mein wazan barh raha tha ya nahi. Wazan nahi barh raha ho to doctor ko dikhayein.

Myth: "Wazan theek hai, to qad ki fikar nahi karni"

Ghalat: Sirf wazan dekhna kaafi hai, qad ki zaroorat nahi.
Haqeeqat: Wazan aur qad dono ko saath dekhna chahiye. Kabhi wazan theek hota hai magar qad kam barh raha hota hai, aur kabhi qad theek hota hai magar wazan kam hota hai.

Ghalat: Bacha kam barh raha ho to koi bhi tonic ya syrup shuru kar dena chahiye.
Haqeeqat: Pehle ye pata karna zaroori hai ke bacha kam kyun barh raha hai.

Haqeeqat: Ye tool sirf ek screening guide hai, diagnosis nahi. Bache ko bukhar, kamzori, khane se inkaar ya koi aur takleef ho to growth normal hone ke bawajood doctor ko dikhayein.

When to See a Doctor About Your Child's Growth

Please show your child to a doctor (preferably a paediatrician) if:

  • Weight or height is below the normal range for his or her age
  • Weight has stopped increasing or has dropped over two or three checks
  • Your child has moved from a higher range to a clearly lower one over time
  • Weight is above the normal range for his or her age
  • Poor feeding, repeated illness, constant tiredness or delayed milestones are present alongside slow growth
Sirf ek reading par pareshan na hon, lekin nazar-andaz bhi na karein.

About This Tool

The growth checker uses WHO child growth standards for children from birth to 10 years. The normal range shown is the range in which most healthy children of the same age and sex fall. It is meant to guide parents and is not a diagnosis. Your child's doctor will also consider birth history, feeding, family height and overall health.
