Breastfeeding (Maa Ka Doodh): Benefits & What Breast Milk Contains
Breastfeeding is the natural, complete way to feed a newborn. Breast milk provides nutrition, protection against infection and comfort, all in one. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommend starting breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, feeding only breast milk for the first 6 months, and continuing alongside family foods up to 2 years or beyond.
This guide explains what breast milk contains, why it matters for both baby and mother, and how to handle common myths and the family pressure many new mothers hear: "Tumhara doodh kam hai".
Quick Facts
- Start: Within the first hour after birth (skin-to-skin contact helps).
- First 6 months: Breast milk only. Nothing else (no pani, ghutti, shehad, chai or gripe water) unless a doctor advises.
- After 6 months: Continue breastfeeding and add soft homemade foods like mashed banana, potatoes and rice.
- Continue: Up to 2 years or longer, as mother and baby wish.
Zaroori Baatein
- Maa ka doodh kab shuru karein: Paidaish ke pehle ghante ke andar (Maa ka bache ko apne seene se lagana uski sehat aur sukoon ke liye faidemand hota hai.)
- Pehle 6 mahine: Sirf maa ka doodh dein. Doctor ke mashwaray ke baghair pani, ghutti, shehad, chai, gripe water ya dabbe ka doodh na dein.
- 6 mahine ke baad: Maa ke doodh kay sath upar ki naram ghiza yani ghar ka khana shuru karein jaise aloo kela chawal ki kheer halwa waghera.
What Does Breast Milk Contain?
Breast milk is a living fluid. Its composition changes during a single feed, across the day, and as your baby grows.
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Water (about 87%) | Keeps baby hydrated, so extra water is not needed in the first 6 months, even in summer |
| Lactose (milk sugar) | Main energy source, supports brain growth and gut health |
| Fats (including DHA and ARA) | Energy, brain and eye development |
| Proteins (mostly whey) | Easy to digest, so breastfed babies pass stools and spit-up differently from formula-fed babies |
| Antibodies (especially sIgA) | Coat baby's gut and throat and fight germs the mother has met |
| Lactoferrin and lysozyme | Natural anti-germ proteins |
| Human milk oligosaccharides | Feed good gut bacteria and help block harmful ones |
| Vitamins and minerals | Balanced for baby's needs. Vitamin D is low, so your doctor may advise your baby vitamin D drops from birth |
| Enzymes and living cells | Help digestion and immune defence |
Stages of Breast Milk
1. Colostrum (first few days)
Thick, yellowish and produced in small amounts. It is rich in antibodies and protein that fight harmful bacteria, acts as baby's first "vaccine-shield" protection, and helps clear the first black stool (meconium). Never throw it away. It is not "dirty" or "bad" milk.
2. Transitional milk (about day 3 to 14)
Milk "comes in" around day 2 to 5. Breasts feel fuller and the milk becomes lighter and more plentiful.
3. Mature milk (after about 2 weeks)
Thinner-looking, with foremilk (watery, quenches thirst) at the start of a feed and hindmilk (creamier, more fat) later. Let baby finish one breast before switching.
Duration (Kitni dair pilana chahiye?)
Feed often (8 to 12 times in 24 hours for a newborn). Let your baby feed for about 15 to 20 minutes from each breast. Burp your baby after feeding, then keep your baby upright for 10 to 20 minutes after the feed. This helps digestion and reduces spitting up and reflux.
Is se hazma behtar hota hai aur ulti aur reflux kam hota hai.
Benefits for Your Baby
- Fewer episodes of diarrhoea, chest infections and ear infections
- Lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- Helps protect premature babies from serious gut infection like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
- Lower risk of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life
- Supports healthy brain development and bonding
- Always ready, clean, at the right temperature and free
Maa ka doodh pilane se bache mein dast (diarrhoea), chest infection aur kaan ke infection kam hote hain. Aage chal kar bachpan ka motapa aur type 2 diabetes ka khatra bhi kam hota hai. Ye dimaghi nashonuma ko support karta hai aur maa aur bache ka rishta mazboot karta hai. Sab se bari baat, maa ka doodh hamesha tayyar, saaf, sahi temperature par aur bilkul muft available hota hai.
Benefits for the Mother
- Helps the womb contract and reduces bleeding after delivery
- Lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer
- Lower risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease over time
- Helps with emotional bonding
- Saves money on formula, bottles and sterilising
- May delay the return of periods, but it is not a reliable contraceptive on its own. Ask your doctor about family planning.
Common Myths
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Baby needs ghutti, gripe water, saunf pani or chai | Not needed. These can cause infection, diarrhoea and reduce breastfeeding |
| Shehad (honey) or cheeni ka pani on the tongue is a good start | Never give honey before 12 months (risk of infant botulism). Avoid sugar water too |
| Baby needs pani in summer (garmi) | Breast milk is enough for hydration under 6 months |
| Gae/bhains ka doodh or dabba milk is just as good | Not suitable as the main drink before 12 months. It lacks the right balance of nutrients and can harm baby's gut and kidneys and baby may fail to thrive (having low weight and height) |
| First milk (colostrum) is bad | It is the most valuable milk. Feed it |
| Small breasts make less milk | Breast size does not decide milk supply |
| Mother must stop if she has a cold or fever | Usually safe to continue. Antibodies pass to baby. Wash hands and consult your doctor |
| Formula is better because the baby looks "full" | Breast milk is designed for the baby. Formula is a safe backup when medically needed |
Desi Remedies for Low Milk (Doodh Barhane ke Totkay)
After delivery, many families offer methi (fenugreek), saunf (fennel), daliya, panjiri, ghee, dry fruits, gond or special "doodh barhane wali" drinks. What the evidence says:
- What really builds supply: feeding often, a good latch, emptying the breast, rest and enough food and fluids.
- Methi and saunf: small amounts in food are generally fine, but proof that they increase milk is weak. Methi can cause gas or loose stools in baby and can lower blood sugar, so avoid strong methi teas or supplements without asking your doctor, especially if you have diabetes.
- Daliya, oats, dal, milk, ghee and dry fruits: good for your energy and recovery, but no single food "makes" milk.
- Warm drinks and soups: comforting and help hydration. After a caesarean section (operated mothers), they also help healing.
- Common first-week worry: colostrum comes in small amounts, and that is exactly what a newborn's tiny stomach needs. It is not "low milk".
- Doodh ki miqdar asal mein kaise badhti hai: baar baar doodh pilana, Bache ka breast ko sahi tarah munh mein lena (latch), aur maa ka achi ghiza khana, munasib miqdar mein paani peena aur aaram karna, doodh ki paidawar behtar banane mein madad karta hai.
- Methi aur saunf: khane mein thori miqdaar aam taur par theek hai, lekin doodh barhane ka saboot kamzor hai.
- Daliya, oats, dal, doodh, ghee aur dry fruits: aapki energy aur recovery ke liye achay hain, lekin koi bhi aik khana doodh badhane mein madad nahi karta. Balanced diet leni chahiye.
- Garam drinks aur soup: sukoon deti hain aur hydration mein madad karti hain. Caesarean section (operation wali maaon) ke baad zakhm bharne mein bhi madad karti hain.
- Pehle hafte mein: colostrum (yani shuru ka gaarha doodh) thori miqdaar mein aata hai, aur newborn ke chhote se pait ko bilkul yahi chahiye. Ye "doodh ki kami" nahi hai.
Family Pressure After Delivery
Elders often say "Tumhara doodh kam hai, ghutti do, pani pilao, dabbe ka doodh lagao", usually out of love. But every top-up feed means less sucking at the breast, and less sucking means less milk. Some ways to handle it:
- Explain calmly that WHO and doctors advise only breast milk for 6 months.
- Ask your paediatrician to talk to the elders. Advice from a doctor is often accepted more easily.
- Show them the signs baby is feeding well: 6 or more wet nappies a day after the first week, regular stools and weight gain.
- Ask family to help with food, daily chores and rest instead of feeding the baby: a rested mother makes feeding easier.
Ghar Walay Ghutti Ya Upar Ka Doodh Dene Par Zor Dein To Kya Karein?
- Pyaar se samjhayein: WHO aur doctors pehle 6 mahine sirf maa ka doodh dene ka mashwara dete hain.
- Unhein nishaniyan dikhayein ke bacha theek se doodh pi raha hai: pehle hafte ke baad din mein 6 ya zyada geeley pampers, baqaida potty aur wazan mein izafa. Ye is baat ki nishani hai ke aapka doodh bache ke liye kafi hai.
- Ghar walon se madad maangein: bache ko doodh pilane ke bajaye wo khane, rozana ke kaam aur aaram mein madad karein. Aaram karne wali maa ke liye doodh pilana asaan hota hai.
Formula Milk (Dabba Ka Doodh): When Is It Needed?
Breast milk is best, but formula is a safe option when a doctor advises it or when breastfeeding is not possible. A fed baby is always better than a hungry baby. Use formula only on your doctor's advice, and do not mix feeding methods without discussing it first, as this can reduce your own supply.
Maa ka doodh sab se behtar hai, lekin jab doctor mashwara dein ya doodh pilana mumkin na ho to formula ek mehfooz option hai. Pet bhara hua bacha hamesha bhooke bache se behtar hai. Formula sirf doctor ke mashwaray se shuru karein, aur doctor se poochay baghair feeding ke tareeqe mix na karein, kyunke is se aapki apni supply kam ho sakti hai.
When Breastfeeding Needs Medical Advice
Most mothers can breastfeed safely, but speak to your doctor first if:
- Baby has galactosemia (a rare metabolic condition)
- Mother has HIV or TB, as advice depends on treatment and local guidelines
- Mother is taking chemotherapy or certain other medicines
- Mother is very unwell or baby is premature or very sleepy
Never stop or start medicines while breastfeeding without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
Kab Doodh Pilane Se Pehle Doctor Se Poochna Zaroori Hai?
- Bache ko galactosemia ho (ek rare metabolic bimari).
When to See a Doctor
- Baby is not feeding well, is very sleepy, or has fewer wet nappies than expected
- Baby looks yellow or is losing weight
- Painful, red or hard breast with fever
- Cracked, bleeding nipples that are not improving
- You feel your milk is not enough
