What Is Albumin? Normal Range, Low & High Levels Explained
Albumin is the most abundant protein in your blood plasma, made by the liver. It plays a critical role in maintaining fluid balance, transporting hormones, vitamins, and medications through the bloodstream, and reflecting overall liver and kidney health. That is why a simple blood test called a serum albumin test is often part of a routine liver function test (LFT) or comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP).

Functions of Albumin in the Body
- Maintains fluid balance: Albumin creates oncotic (colloid osmotic) pressure that keeps fluid inside blood vessels instead of leaking into surrounding tissues — this is why low albumin causes swelling (edema).
- Transports substances: Acts as a carrier protein for hormones, vitamins, calcium, bilirubin, and many medications, moving them through the bloodstream to where they're needed.
- Acts as a buffer: Helps maintain normal blood pH by binding and neutralizing acids and other substances.
- Antioxidant activity: Binds free radicals and reactive oxygen species, offering some protection against oxidative stress.
- Reflects nutritional and organ status: Since it's made only by the liver and needs adequate protein intake, albumin levels serve as an indirect marker of nutrition, liver function, and kidney health.
Normal Albumin Range
| Age Group | Normal Range (g/dL) |
|---|---|
| Adults | 3.4 – 5.4 g/dL |
| Children | 3.8 – 5.4 g/dL |
| Newborns | 2.9 – 5.4 g/dL |
Values vary slightly by lab, so always compare against the reference range printed on your own report.
What Causes Low Albumin (Hypoalbuminemia)?
- Liver disease (cirrhosis, hepatitis) — reduced production
- Kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome) — albumin lost in urine
- Malnutrition or protein-deficient diet
- Chronic inflammation or infection
- Severe burns or major surgery
- Inflammatory bowel disease (malabsorption)
- Heart failure (fluid dilution effect)
In these conditions mentioned above, either albumin production decreases or there is an increased loss of albumin, so in both cases the appearing symptoms are similar.
Common symptoms of low albumin: swelling (edema) in legs/ankles/abdomen, fatigue, muscle wasting, slow wound healing, and frothy urine (if kidney-related).
Common symptoms of low albumin (hypoalbuminemia), including swelling or edema, fatigue, muscle wasting, slow wound healing, and frothy urine associated with protein loss through the kidneys.
What Causes High Albumin (Hyperalbuminemia)?
High albumin is less common and usually caused by dehydration (concentrating the blood) rather than a disease itself. Severe dehydration, high-protein diet, or lab/sample error can also raise readings.
Albumin and the Liver: Why Doctors Check It
Because the liver is the sole producer of albumin, a low result — especially when paired with elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST) or bilirubin — points toward chronic liver damage such as cirrhosis. It's one of the key markers used to calculate the Child-Pugh score for liver disease severity.
How to Improve Low Albumin Naturally
- Increase dietary protein: eggs, lean meat, fish, dairy, lentils/dals
- Treat the underlying cause (liver, kidney, or inflammatory condition)
- Reduce sodium intake if swelling is present
- Follow up with repeat labs after 4–6 weeks of dietary correction
